Books I love

Ok, so reading has nothing to do with Jewish jewelry.  I know.

But hey, as a mom of three I am always driving and reading.  I decided that I would share my list of favorite reads and listens in this blog.  I always have a book on my ipod and one on my nightstand.  Driving endlessly all day long, from schools to work, to activities makes listening to books in the car the best thing ever!!!  I find that I tend to gravitate toward historical novels, but I must always balance that out with a vampire/supernatural book.

I hope you can share your books as well.

On My Cell now: Podcasts, am really enjoying My Wife Quit Her Job

On my nightstand now: The Persimmon Tree by Bryce Courtenay

Past Reads and Listens:

On Golden Mountain by Lisa See

The Pecan Man

A Japanese Lover

A Man Named Ove

Lone Survivor  by Marcus LuttrellDiscovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness.  Cute, a little boring, would read the sequel but wasn’t “wow!”

Narcissus in Chains by Laurell Hamilton.  Same old same old, ok book.

Solomon’s Song by Bryce Courtney.  Never disappoints!! Excellent

The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom. Should be made into a movie, very enjoyable!

Monsters of Templeton by Lauren Groff.   Enjoyable

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.  No wonder was on the best selling list for so long!!!

The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry.  Enjoyable

The Wolf Gift.  Awful

The Witch of Portobello.  Awful

The Silent Wife by ASA Harrison  a wonderful listen!
Storm of Swords by George RR Martin.  Didn’t disappoint, excellent again!
Feast for Crows by George RR Martin. A much harder book to get through then the other 3, the last hour is the best of them all.

The Birth House by Ami McKay was an easy basic read.

Four Fires by Bryce Courtney was fantastic!

Incubus Dreams by Laurell K Hamilton– awful and quit in the middle.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.    Was  decent book, totally not what was expected!

The War Horse by Michael Morpurgo.   Disliked it, couldn’t finish it.

Tommo and Hawk by Bryce Courtney.  Fantastic, wonderful!  Can’t wait to download book #3 to hear on my MP3.  Don’t read this, the reader is so wonderful!

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.  Ehhhh..  Weird, not my favorite.

The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka.   I have never read a book without a character.  Touching, moving, do not miss this book!

Clash of Kings by George RR Martin.  Fantastic!

Lost in Shangrai-La by Mitchell Zuckoff .   Was good, not my sort of book that I normally listen to, but wasn’t unpleasant and I learned about New Guinea.

IQ84 by Haruki Murakami.    Hated it, stopped reading after 1/4 way through.  Comments on Amazon justified my quitting.

Salvage the Bones: A Novel by Jesmyn Ward.    A very good book indeed!

Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin.        Fantastic!  Must listen to this rather than read.  Amazing!

Please Look After Mom by  Kyung-sook Shin.     Very good to read, and the fact that it was translated from Korean made the story more “personal.”  Highly recommended.

The Sojourn by Andrew Krivak               Good.  Not the best, too much army life info.  I was more interested in the life of the entire man, not just the army years.  Oh well.

The Nazi Officer’s Wife by Edith Hahn Beer.           Excellent.  An autobiography that I was hesitant to listen to and loved!  5 Stars

Year of Wonders: A Novel of the Plague by Geraldine Brooks— very good to listen to.  5 Stars

Obsidian Butterfly by Laurell K. Hamilton :  Yep, another great book in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series!  5 Stars

Room by Emma Donoghue:  At first I couldn’t stand it, but then I was loosing sleep thinking about the story!.  So real, it is terrifying! 5 stars

The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flame.  by Michael Scott

Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok.

A wonderful book that made you actually feel like you are part of the main character’s life.                                                                            5 Stars!

Caleb’s Crossing.    Well, I tried to like it.  I really did.  I finally gave it and turned off the IPOD.  I just didn’t enjoy it at all.                                                                                      1 Star

Dead Reckoning– Sookie Stackhouse book 11        2 stars

Now, I devoured these books.   This one though, boring!  It wasn’t exciting, didn’t leave you wanting to turn the next page.  Just a read, nothing exciting.  The previous book was about equally as interesting.

Lisa See’s book Dreams of Joy. I really enjoyed this book! I felt like I was living their lives at some moments. A wonderful read, not to be missed. This is part two of the series, Shanghai Girls was part one.                                                                                                     5 stars

The Zookeeper’s Wife is on hold.  It just wasn’t holding my attention, so it go pushed aside.

Swamplandia by Karen Russell                                          1 star.  I got bored, gave it 5 hours of listening time and it  was  just  so boring.  I think it might have been the reader, but I had to quit.

On All Other Nights by Dara Horn                                                         3 stars  Easy read, not too deep at all.  Jewish soldier in Civil War

The Tiger’s Wife by Tea Obreht                                                                5 stars  I usually don’t like short stories, but this one meshed them all into one, so enjoyable!
